Compact, lightweight, single-channel bat recorder, developed specifically for bat research.
SM4BAT recorders’ innovative design includes a low-power processor, easy-to-use scheduling and a best-in-class ultrasonic microphone.
Full-Spectrum and Zero-Crossing Models
Two models to fit your recording needs and budget.
The SM4BAT FS records to full-spectrum WAV files. Full-spectrum recorders have a significant signal-to-noise ratio advantage over zero-crossing recorders so you’ll record more bats with higher quality for more effective analysis.
The SM4BAT ZC is a zero-crossing, lower-cost alternative to the SM4BAT FS. Zero-crossing bat recorders detect fewer bats than full spectrum bat recorders, but are well suited for applications that require very low power consumption and high storage for extended deployments.
New Generation Ultrasonic Microphone
Record fainter bats or bats at greater distances.
The SMM-U2 microphone is significantly quieter than the previous generation SMM-U1, and competitor’s microphones. The superior signal to noise ratio results in recording fainter bats and bat calls at greater distances. In addition, more echolocation pulses are recorded, which allows more accurate identification.
The enclosure’s innovative waterproof design includes a built-in mounting bracket that provides a wide range of mounting options. The microphone includes a 5 meter cable, and can connect with cables up to 100m in length with no adverse effect on recording quality.
Best-In-Class Recording Technology
Over a decade of continual improvements.
The SM4BAT intelligent recording triggers and noise file scrubber help maximize the number of bat echolocations recorded and minimize recordings that do not contain bat echolocations. The SMM-U2 along with the SM4BAT and its advanced trigger technology produce the cleanest and quietest recordings available.
Compact, Weatherproof Design
Deploy anywhere, and keep your data safe.
Wildlife Acoustics is the only bioacoustics equipment provider that designs and molds enclosures from the ground up, rather than modifying off-the-shelf housings. The SM4BAT has been designed around the footprint of 4 D-size batteries and made of rugged polycarbonate. The result is a housing that’s lightweight and fit for purpose. The integrated mounting bracket and weatherproof security cover keep the unit safe and dry in the most punishing environments.
Extended Deployment Capabilities
Save time, money, and take fewer trips into the field.
The SM4BAT’s low-power microprocessor and intelligent triggers, combined with 4 D-size batteries, enable extremely long deployment times. The SM4BAT FS has a recording run time up to 450 hours (e.g. 45 10-hour nights) depending on bat activity and other factors. The SM4BAT ZC run time is up to 700 hours.
Use the optional power cable to extend deployment times ever further with an external battery and/or solar panel. See Specifications for details.
Easy Programming
Quickly set up and deploy with less worry.
To get you started quickly, the SM4BAT features easy-to-use Quick Start schedules, such as sunset to sunrise. You can also customize your schedules for specific recording needs. The free SM4 Configurator software can be used to configure settings and schedules from a computer. The SM4 Configurator software also provides a Security Lock option to prevent accidental changes to deployment and recording settings.
Available GPS Accessory
Save money with a single GPS antenna.
When deploying multiple recorders, use a single GPS antenna to set and synchronize the date, time and location settings on multiple recorders. For mobile transects, use it to log recording locations and transect paths.
